Our business has always refrained from politics. Instead we've focused on educating the public about sea turtles and lighting issues that affect them. Our headquarters are located in the panhandle of Florida so we are intimately involved in the Deep Water Horizon
oil spill DISASTER. Don't let the media or BP spin this in any other way, this is a complete
disaster of the highest order.
The spill could not have occurred at a worse time for nesting sea
turtles in the Gulf of Mexico either. The nesting season began one week after the oil started flowing. We are frustrated.....to be quite frank we are pissed. In our personal lives over the years we have spent a lot of time protesting off shore drilling and advocating for new alternative clean energy sources. I look at it like this, you would not provide cheap crack to a crack addict if you truly wanted them to break their addiction. We are all crack addicts, but our crack is oil. We all use it in some form every single day. Where is the logic in "breaking our countries
addiction to oil" if we continue to drill for more and more oil. Let the price of oil climb and Americans will seek out alternative forms
of energy or reduce their energy consumption. At what cost do we continue our addiction?
If you watched the short film on the home page of this site then you learned that sea turtles are "the canaries in the coal mine of the planet's oceans". They warn us of eminent danger in the oceans. As I am writing this, there have been just over 200 confirmed animal deaths resulting from the oil spill. Of those 200 animals, 162 of them have been sea turtles. The canaries are telling us that we are in big trouble!
The oil industry's inability to do anything remotely intelligent to curb the Deep Water Horizon disaster has been just too much. I've sat through meetings and debates with oil executives and spokesmen over the years who swore that something like this could never happen, that "their systems were fail proof", that "we did not understand how advanced the industry was now". It was these arguments that often enabled them
to open new wells. In the midst of this disaster I hear some in this nation continuing a push for new oil exploration. I can not hear it any more. I sat at my computer and designed this shirt. It is not an attack on a political party (democratic president Obama is advocating new drilling), but rather an attack on the idea of "drill baby drill". We all play
a part in this disaster, so the question stands, "drill baby drill?"..........bad plan.
If you truly feel that the time has come to end our dependence on oil then say so and start making decisions in your own life to move away from oil. Ride your bike. Carpool.
Take a bus. Get an electric bike. Some may consider these small steps pointless, but change has to start somewhere. Our addiction to oil is destroying the planet and our children's future.
