Selling flashlights was the last thing we ever intended to do. The goal of Turtle Safe Products was to help reduce light pollution on beaches. Many of our vendors began asking us to manufacture a quality flashlight to use with the Turtle Safe filters. After much hesitation we began to realize that flashlights actually provide a unique opportunity for educating people about sea turtles and lighting. Turtle Safe Products is located in the panhandle of Florida, where the tourist season coincides with the sea turtle nesting season. Thousands of tourists take flashlights onto the beaches every night during this time. The majority of these flashlights are cheap plastic disposable lights purchased at local beach shops.

We also wanted to produce a flashlight that did not use disposable batteries. This is where the idea for a solar powered flashlight came in. It takes 55 times more energy to manufacture a disposable battery than the energy that, that battery will emit in it's life. Our solar powered flashlights trickle charge any time they are in the light, and each one lasts about ten years before the internal batteries finally die.
